Modern Prep

Hello Cupcakes,

Preppy fashion has its roots in the ivy league style of dress. For men, J.Press represented Ivy League style, which was founded at Yale University. In the mid-twentieth century, J.Press and Brooks Brothers both had stores at Yale, Harvard and Princeton. Some preppy styles also reflect traditional leisure activities, such as rugby, polo, crew, sailing, hunting, rowing, tennis etc. For women, preppy style was a trend in the 1960s. This style often included tailored skirts, nautical stripes and equestrian clothing.

For a little while, preppy style was not on trend to some. However, today, designers like Ralph Lauren, J.Crew and Brooks Brothers continue to push the envelope forward and add preppy styles into their clothing line.

It’s cool, it’s stylish, it looks great. But how do you accomplish this look? Oh that’s easy! Well, at least for some people. Start with the basics, get a pair of trousers or chinos and an oxford shirt. Or, rather than going head-to-toe preppy, fashionistas are mixing their preppy pieces with pieces of other aesthetics to create a unique look.

For my modern preppy look, I opted for navy blue stirrup pants, a crew neck, varsity jacket and nude pumps. Varsity Jackets are a wardrobe staple for this preppy style. To add to the look I wore a red bandana around my neck. How have you incorporated preppy style into your wardrobe?
